Atlanta is located twelve miles south of Winnfield on State Highway 34. It was laid out in 1875 by a Dr. T. S. Collier and began to expand in the early 1900s after a railroad and large sawmill were built in the area. Most of its early residents had either come from Atlanta Georgia or had relatives there.
