Bastrop was named to honor the Baron de Bastrop, who helped populate the area that is now Morehouse Parish. The site of present day Bastrop was an early steamboat port on Bayou Bartholomew called Pleasant Point, but it developed more slowly than other communities in the parish until a railroad was built through there in 1900.
In spite of this slow growth the settlement was chosen as the seat when the parish was create in 1844 and it was the first community to be incorporated in the parish (1852).
