Bernice is one of the most recent communities of Union Parish. The area was once called the Big Woods, but the virgin pine forest attracted lumber interests. The Arkansas Southern Railroad was built through the area in the 1890s and its owner laid out the town and put on an extensive advertising campaign to sell all the lots in 1899. He named the town after the daughter of the man who sold him the land.
