The plot of land now known as Farmerville was believed to have been found by John Honeycutt in 1790. When the parish was formed in 1839 Farmerville was chosen as the seat of government because it was within one mile of the geographic center of the parish. It was named after W. W. Farmer who later became a lieutenant-governor of the state. On March 15, 1842 the town received its first charter of incorporation from the state.
