Lawrason Act

Gretna is the parish seat of Jefferson Parish and the most populous incorporated community on the West Bank. Before it was incorporated in 1913 the area consisted of the communities of Mechanicham, New Mechanicham, Gretna, New Gretna and McDonoghville.

The name Gretna has several possible origins, the most popular being a village in Scotland called Gretna Green where young English couples would go to get married because of the more liberal Scottish marriage laws. Gretna"s first settlers were mostly German farmers who took their abundant crops across the river to New Orleans" French Market.
