The city of Kenner is the oldest in Jefferson Parish. Prior to the establishment of the city in 1855 the land was known as Cannes Burlees (burnt canes) and was a landmark on the Mississippi River. A commuter railroad line was established from Kenner to New Orleans as early as 1915 and in the early 1930s the first of many manufacturing concerns was built there. In 1934 the Wendell-Williams Airport was built on the site of present day New Orleans International Airport
