The Town of Lutcher was named after H. J. Lutcher, a lumber baron from Orange, Texas who came to the town in the early 20th century and cleared the Cypress swamp along the Blind River of trees and then went back to Texas.
Lutcher was a booming lumber town back then. Today it is the home of the St. James Historical Society museum and a lot of old building made of cypress. Its namesake ended up in a Cincinnati sanitarium .
