Named after Mrs. Sarepta Carter, who donated a large Bible to the first church in the area. The village developed slowly and in 1884 a post office was established. The railroad came through in 1898 and the discovery of oil in the area hastened development after 1922. Sarepta was incorporated as a town on May 22nd of 1987.
