History of Shreveport


1803 Larkin Edwards is the first settler near what is Shreveport today.
1817 James Coatessettles in the area.
1832 July 1
The Cane-Bennett Trading Post is established by James Cane and his brother-in-law William Smith Bennett, both from New Hampshire, on the bluff where Shreveport will be founded 1836.
1833 Captain Henry Miller Shreve arrives on the Red River to remove the log jam which is 165 miles long, extending from Loggy Bayou to Hurricane Bluffs
1835 John McLeod settles in the area.
1835 July 1
Caddo Indians cede about 1,000,000 acres to the U.S. for $80,000 at the Caddo Agency House. By this treaty the Indians also give to Larkin Edwards, interpreter and friend, a tract of land that will become the site of Shreveport.
1837 The removal of the raft by Captain Henry Miller Shreve opens the Red River to navigation and makes Shreveport an important center of trade and a gateway to the West.
1838 February 4
The city of Shreveport is founded by Shreve Town Co. and is named for Captain Henry Miller Shreve.
1839 March 20
Shreveport is incorporated .
1843 - 912 Commerce Street in Shreveport, where Gen. Smith lived 1863-65 while Commander of Trans-Miss. Dept. CSA is built; It will be demolished in 1960. Originally home of La. Supreme Court Judge Thomas T. Land.
1856 Trinity Catholic Church is established in Shreveport, Holy Trinity was moved to this site in 1858. Five of its priests lost their lives treating the victims of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1873. The present church, in Romanesque Revival style, was built in 1896.
