This community had several names before it simply took the name of a store owner who ran the post office out of his establishment. Like most communities in the area its fortune rose and fell with the timber industry and the railroads between 1900 and the 1920s. Sikes survived in spite of a fire that destroyed most of the town in 1924. Among the buildings destroyed was the first hospital in Winn Parish.
