Parish Info

Daniel Colvin settled here in 1807 with his family. They were the first permanent settlers in a region that had been explored by hunters and surveyors only recently. The appearance of a village did not occur, however , until about 1833. There is no record which explains the name, but it most probably came from settlers who traveled from Vienna, Georgia, since the Georgians have the same surprising mispronunciation (Vie-an-na) as do the Louisianians.

After 1833 commercial establishments began to appear here along an early stage line between Shreveport to the west and Monroe in the east. Vienna was first incorporated as a town in 1848 and again after the war in 1866 and 1873 when the parish was formed. It was the parish seat for ten years after that until a courthouse was built in Ruston. Today it serves as a suburb of Ruston.

First called Colvin’s Post Office, Vienna, La. will be incorporated in 1848. It is an overnight stop on the Trenton-Shreveport Stage Road, later called the Wire Road when the telegraph line was strung along it.
