Parish Info

Winnfield is appropriately called the Forest Capital of Louisiana and the annual Louisiana Forestry Festival attracts visitors from a wide area.
Gansville was the original parish seat of government, but even though it was originally founded in 1712 (even before Natchitoches and New Orleans) a site near the center of the parish was chosen. In 1853 an engineer was hired to survey and lay out the new community. By 1855 it was a bustling community called Winnfield. It was first incorporated in that year.
Winnfield experienced rapid growth after 1901 when the first of four railroads was built through the town. It was during this period that Winnfield was home to three men who would become governors of the state: Huey P. Long, Earl K. Long and O. K. Allen.
Type of Government: Mayor / Bd. of Alderman (5) Lawrason Act
