Community Spirit
Bienville Parishós (county) rural, country-like atmosphere provides many opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and recreational pursuits, yet its location between Shreveport and Monroe has helped to make it a regional center of commerce and culture. Its early settlers were mostly devout Baptist pioneers who quickly established churches, schools and broad fields of cotton. This attitude of faith, education and hard work prevails to this day.
Geography
Bienville Parish extends 30 miles north to south and 37 miles east to west. The surface of the parish is varied with productive high hills, elevated plateaus, gentle undulations, fertile valleys and dismal swamps. Running through the parish from north to south are the large bayous Black Lake and Saline. The central part of the parish has numerous bold streams that are excellent sites for saw mills, cotton gins and grist mills. Beautiful Lake Bistineau, which is navigable and connected to the Red River by Loggy Bayou, creates part of the extreme western border. The elevation averages 140 in the flood plains of the south, but ranges from 200 to 400 feet in the uplands. Driskill Mountain, in the northwest part of parish, is the highest point in Louisiana at 535 feet above sea level.

The Bienville Parish Sheriff’s The Bienville Parish Sheriffós main office is located in the Parish Courthouse in Arcadia and handles all of the criminal, civil and tax division operations, as well as police protection, throughout the parish. Of the 37 people employed by the sheriffós office, 26 are full-time deputies, with 15 of them providing 24-hour patrol throughout the parish.

Bienville Parish has 25 fire stations with 2 paid firemen and 187 volunteer firemen located throughout the parish.
Hospitals
In Arcadia, one hospital provides 30-plus beds for area residents. A full-service emergency room is located in Ruston, 18 miles away on I-20. Although there is no hospital in Ringgold or Gibsland an emergency room can be found at Minden, also only minutes away on the interstate.
A local 911 service is being established in the parish for police, fire and ambulance services.
Residents have access to the large number of medical facilities located in the regional area, including the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport and numerous other public and private medical facilities.
Parks
and
Recreation
Organized sports leagues include little league and church league activities. Bienville Parish also has 1 golf course, 2 community swimming pools and 8 tennis courts. Boating, and fishing on local lakes are also major activities for visitors and residents of the parish.
Shreveport has a symphony, opera and ballet and NCAA college athletics are available from Grambling University, Northwestern State University, Louisiana Tech University, and others. AA Professional Baseball is available with the Shreveport Captains at the Fairgrounds only 60 miles from Minden.
Louisiana Downs, 50 miles away off I-20 and U.S. 80 in Bossier City is one of the nationós top thoroughbred racetracks. The four-level, glass-enclosed grandstand contains a variety of restaurants, bars and seating areas. Racing season runs from April to November, Wednesdays through Sundays. Off track betting available January through March.

Shopping
The Shreveport Central Business District and Bossier City are less than an hour away from Arcadia, and  seen an explosion of retail activity in the past few years. Monroe, Louisiana is 47 miles to the east with a regional shopping center.
Media
Communications in the area includes two local weekly newspapers The Bienville Democrat‹Arcadia (circulation: 2,800) and The Ringgold Progress‹Ringgold (circulation: 6,665). Metropolitan daily newspapers from Shreveport and Monroe are also circulated in Bienville Parish.
Several Shreveport and Monroe stations are available in Bienville Parish.
Television stations can be received from Shreveport or Monroe including all four networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX ), as well as several independent and public broadcast stations. Cable service is also available in the parish.

Climate
Bienville Parish has a semitropical climate. The average annual temperature for the state as a whole is 67.4š. January is the coldest month averaging 50.7š, and July and August the warmest, averaging 82š. Bienville Parish enjoys a complete seasonal cycle with pleasant spring and fall seasons. Winter months are usually mild with cold spells of short duration. Snowfall is less than 2" per year. The summer months are quite warm, with an average daily high temperature in July and August of 93 degrees.
