The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s main office is located in the Parish Court House in Amite and handles all of the criminal, civil and tax division operations, as well as police protection throughout the parish. Tangipahoa is under 24-hour patrol by the criminal division, which presently has 183 regular deputies and 56 auxiliary deputies. The department has 65 cars and 6 boats to patrol the parish.

Tangipahoa Parish has 13 fire departments with 75 firemen and 365 volunteer firemen located throughout the parish.
Hospitals
Hammond is a regional medical center with 324 beds, 110 physicians and the latest medical technology in the two area hospitals. The Seventh Ward General Hospital and AMI-Westpark Community Hospital provide general medical care while nearby facilities offer an array of specialty services including advanced cardiac care, chemical dependency services, cancer treatment, womenós health services and psychiatric care. Long term health care is available at four nursing homes that count 529 beds. A number of smaller hospitals, clinics and public health units are located around the parish. Parish-wide ambulance service is provided by Acadian Ambulance. Residents have access to the large number of medical facilities located in the regional area, including Charity Hospital in New Orleans, which is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country, the clinics of both LSU and Tulane Schools of Medicine, the prestigious Ochsner Foundation Hospital and Clinics, and numerous other public and private medical facilities. The medical care in the New Orleans region is among the finest available in the world.

Recreation
The parish has access to the vast recreational and cultural facilities of the metropolitan New Orleans area: including the new Aquarium of the Americas, the New Orleans Symphony, opera and ballet, the National Football Leagueós New Orleans Saints, NCAA college athletics from Tulane University, University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University, and others. Boating and fishing on Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain are also major activities for visitors and residents of the parish.
Shopping
Tangipahoa Parish is ranked 12th out of 64 parishes in per capita retail sales. Population of the Immediate Market Area (35 mile radius) is 303,941, and the population in a 50 mile radius is 1,941,940. Department stores in the regional shopping center including Sears and Dillardós serve most of the population in the five parish area.

The New Orleans Central Business District is only 60 miles away, and has seen an explosion of retail activity in the past few years. The Riverwalk, Canal Place, and New Orleans Centre have added several specialty retail outlets, including national chain outlets like Lord and Taylor, Macyós, Brooks Brothers, Sharper Image and Saks Fifth Avenue. Baton Rouge also provides many shopping opportunities 40 miles to the west.
Media
Communications in the area include a local daily newspaper (Hammond Daily Star), several weeklies (The Hammond Vindicator, The Enterprise (Ponchatoula), The Ponchatoula Times , News Digest (Amite, Kentwood), Tangi Talk (Amite), The Ledger (Kentwood)) and the university paper (The Lionós Roar). Three metropolitan daily newspapers from Baton Rouge and New Orleans are circulated in Tangipahoa Parish.

Local radio stations include WFPR (AM), WABL (AM-Amite) WHMD (FM) and KSLU on the university campus. Many Baton Rouge and New Orleans stations are also available.

Television stations can be received from both metropolitan areas and include all four networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX), as well as several independent and public broadcast stations. Cable service is also available in the parish.

Climate
Tangipahoa Parish has an average of 300 days of sun per year and 68 inches of rain. Prevailing winds are from the north and northeast in the winter and fall and from the southeast in the spring and summer.
