Takes office from Paul Bertus who has been acting mayor in the last month of Denis Prieur's administration. After the heady years of growth under Denis Prieur the administration of Genois faces the lean year following the Panic of 1837. His administration is a model of efficiency and helps the city through this period of financial uncertainty. |

Mayor Genois informs the council of the first municipality that the city owes banks at least $1,100,000 with no ability to pay. The banks refuse further loans. Two raise money to meet routinne expenses city land is mortgaged to the banks. Denis Prieur is sent to New York to raise funds for the city. |

Andrew Jackson, now an ex-president,visits New Orleans again. It is the 25th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. He arrives at the Carrollton Wharf in the steamer Vicksburg. The next day he lays a cornerstone in the Place dArmes for a base which will many years later bear a statue of him by Clark Mills. |

Charles Genois dies after a long illness at age 73. His residence is listed as 176 Annunciation St. He is interred in St. Louis Cemetery #2. |
