Nicholas Girod
1747-1840



1747
Born in French Savoy ca. 1747 as a protestant. His family owned interests in shipping and merchantile enterprises.
1770
Nicholas and at least two brothers settle in New Orleans during the Spanish era. Their business is at first located on the levee of the city, but moves later to the corner of St. Louis and Chartres. They purchase properties above the city in the vicinity of Girod Street.
1812
September 21
Elected mayor of New Orleans over James Pitot 859 to 461, but he does not assume office until October 8, 1812. His hopes of economic growth of New Orleans are crushed by the War of 1812.

Re-elected Mayor over Augustin Macarty by 309 votes to 286. He is a staunch Frenchman and a devotee of Napoleon.

Leaves the office of Mayor due to financial reversals
1821
Erects a house at 124 Chartres Street, outfits the ship Seraphine and hires Dominique You to rescue Napoleon from St. Helena. Unfortunately news of Napoleon’s death reaches New Orleans before the trip is made.
1824
Serves city as an alderman and as a church warden of St. Louis Cathedral.
1837
December 23
Writes a holographic will leaving $100,000 to the care of orphans; $30,000 to Charity Hospital; $30,000 to an orphan asylum; $40,000 to Denis Prieur; $50,000 to E. Montamat; $20,000 to E Mazureau; $20,000 to Michoud; $20,000 to A. Fourniere
1840
Nicholas Girod dies at age 93, never having married.
