A territorial act divides the county of Attakapas into two parishes: The parish of St. Martin and the parish of St. Mary. Present-day Vermilion Parish is a part of the parish of St. Martin. |

Abbeville, formerly La Chapelle, is founded by Father Antoine Desire Megret, a native of Abbeville, France, on land purchased from Joseph LeBlanc. The city will became the parish seat of Vermilion in 1845. incorporated by the state in 1850. Home of the Louisiana Dairy Festival. |
