Born in France, son of Jean Baptiste Destrehan of Paris who is treasurer of French Kings Louis XIV and XV, and Marguerite du Sauvnoy.
1722
Jean Baptiste is educated in Paris and arrives in New Orleans in 1722 when it becomes the colonial capital, to serve as treasurer of the Marine.
1739
He is responsible for the construction of the Harvey Canal which is completed in 1739. It provides an alternate route to bring goods into New Orleans from the Gulf of Mexico. He cultivates indigo a land grant in the vicinity of the canal.

Marries Jeanne Catherine Cauvret daughter of Captain J_B de Gauvret an officer under Bienville they raise seven children beyond infancy including Jean Noel Destrehan.
1746
Appointed Comptroller of the colony. He will hold both jobs until his death
1765
Febrary 26
Dies in New Orleans and is interred in St. Louis Cathedral
