| South America & Caribbean:Henry Morgan, who has already sacked Puerto Bello, leads a force across the Panama isthmus to Panama City. Morgan stands trial for violation of a treaty, but is pardoned and knighted by King Charles II. In fact he is knighted and made deputy-governor of Jamaica to rid the island of piracy. Piracy was at its high point during the reign of Charles the Bewitched. Hispanola: 1493 La Isabela is founded on the northern shore of Hispanola as the first European settlement in the new world. Although one member of the expedition describes the site as having a fine harbor, none exists and the colony soon dies out. 1660s French colonists from St. Christopher, Martinique and France begin to settle the fertile coastal lowlands of western Santo Domingo, planting cotton. cacao, sugarcane and tobacco. 1670 Cap François is founded and will become the capital of the colony. It will be renamed Cap-Haiten after independence. The capital is later moved to Port-Au-Prince.Next French possessions in the Caribbean include: St. Christopher shared with English settlers until 1713; St Bartthélemy (1648); Guadeloupe (1635); Maria Galente (1648) Martinique (1635); Grenada (1650). |
