South America & Caribbean:Events of this year in this region influencing Louisiana.
North America:The colony of New Jersey is formed from East and West Jersey. Yellow Fever in New York kills 570. Cotton Mather writes a history of New England.
Europe: William III of England dies after falling from his horse and is succeeded by Anne, his sister-in-law and last monarch of the House of Stuart. Spain and France suffer a major naval defeat in the War of Spanish Succession. London's first daily newspaper is the Courant. Horseracing and sweepstakes are given approval by Queen Anne.

The War of Spanish Succession widens in Europe as the Grand Alliance declares war on France on May 13. The extended war will pit England, the Holy Roman Empire, Holland and Savoy against France and Spain. Leopold I of the HRE hopes to capture Spain's Dutch and Italian lands.
In May, 1702, England declares war against France and Spain, and Louis XIV orders the headquarters of the governor of Louisiana to be moved to Mobile Bay.
Leaving Bienville to carry out this order, Iberville leaves the colony and sails for France.
