Later in the Spring, Iberville leaves France for Mobile, but contracts Yellow Fever in Havana and dies on the 9th of July.
He dies under the cloud of scandal. Indictments allege that Iberville and his family have received considerable fortunes as a result of fraud. Bienville and Chateauguay, still in Louisiana are held suspect. The investigations into the Affaire d Iberville will last until 1735.
The Marine minister Jerome Phelypeaux de Pontchartrain, while believing in Bienville s knowledge of the colony, cannot fully trust him with full authority and creates a bipolar form of government, military and civil. Bienville will hang in this limbo through 1717 even after the Crozat proprietorship replaces Pontchartrain's control.

During the War of Spanish Succession Iberville wins his final battle over the English at Nevis in 1706, but the English under the Duke of Marlborough continue to take major battles. The Chitimacha, once a forceful Indian tribe and the finest basket weavers of their time, are decimated by war with French, 1706-1718 near Baldwin, La. Many became slaves to colonists. Jean François Buisson de St. Cosme of Quebec Seminary, Canada is the first American-born priest killed in Louisiana, near Donaldsonville (Fort Houmas) by Indians. The Taensa Indians are forced to move from their village near Newellton by the Chickasaw and Yazoo.
