| British forces occupy Acadia but leave the French Acadians in peace |
In the winter of 1710 provisions are so scarce that the men of the Louisiana colony are given permission to go and live among the neighboring Indian tribes in order to obtain food. France is engaged in wars with other European nations and the colony is neglected. Most of the early settlers had come to Louisiana with the idea that it was a land of easily to be obtained and vast wealth. They spent their time in vain search for mines or pearl fisheries instead of opening up plantations. |
