Europe: Spain gives up land in the Netherlands and Italy to Austria at the Treaty of Rastatt. Queen Anne dies and the house of Hanover begins its reign in Britain. The new king, who speaks no English, is Prince George Louis, a great grand son of England's James I. Damiel Fahrenheit builds a mercury thermometer. Method of smallpox variolation is published in British journal. Poetry by Bernard Mandeville; cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Founding of Natchitoches by Louis Juchereau de Saint-Denis as the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana and the entire Louisiana Purchase territory west of the Mississippi. Natchitoches Indians, allies of the French, gave their name to the city.
