October 28,1729; Natchez Indians massacre more than 200 settlers and take several hundred women, children and black slaves prisoner. The colonists had demanded that the Natchez give up their sacred burial ground. The draftsman Gonichon is one of the survivors from Natchez. After the attack at Natchez, actual fortifications are first considered for New Orleans. About this time Sr. Pierre Baron, who has pushed his way into the Chief Engineer job, angers Etienne Perier who sends him back to France. Ignace Broutin is named Engineer-in-Chief. |
