Europe: Frederick the Great of Prussia wins victories but rushes back to Berlin to find that Russian troops have sacked the city. George II takes over in Britain after the death of his father. He is King of Great Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover, but his 60 year reign is disastrous for the Empire. Benjamin Franklin, still in London, publishes a paper on smallpox inoculation. Tristram Shandy by Laurence Stern; paintings by Gainsborough and Reynolds; music by Haydn. Belgian rollerskate inventor.

Intendant Rochemore writes that after a January 20 meeting work began immediately on a moat and palisade with bastions, platforms and curtins according to plans by Chief Engineer Deverges. A quick plan of the palisades shows the large four block square and names Hospital Street for the first time. It also shows Chartres closed between Iberville and Bienville behind the governor's house built for Vaudreuil in 1745.

A letter by Intendant Rochemore states that the moat is almost complete and the palisade at the river is partially complete. He complains of placement of the gates which Deverges places at St. Peter. It is convenient to the market which is on the levee near where the Jax Brewery is today.
