November 3, 1762 a preliminary peace treaty is signed at Fountainbleau. France will lose Canada and will cede Louisiana to Spain to compensate for its loss of Florida to the English. Louisiana has been a burden on the French treasury and Spain seeks a buffer for its tenuously held Texas territory and mineral rich Mexico.

Louis XV persuades his Spanish cousin Carlos III to accept Louisiana; reluctantly Carlos agrees. Transferring the colony to Spain will allow France to position herself more advantageously before peace negotiations got underway to end the Seven Years War.
