South America & Caribbean:Events of this year in this region influencing Louisiana.
North America:British admiral Rodney captures French Caribbean islands Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada. Havana falls to British force.
Europe: Louis XV drives Jesuits out of France and builds Le Petit Trianon for his latest mistress. Russia withdraws from the Seven Years War signalling the beginning of its end. The Social Contract and fiction by Jean Jacques Rousseau; Wedgewood tableware. Life insurance in London, typhus in Italy.

November 3, 1762 a preliminary peace treaty is signed at Fountainbleau. France will lose Canada and will cede Louisiana to Spain to compensate for its loss of Florida to the English. Louisiana has been a burden on the French treasury and Spain seeks a buffer for its tenuously held Texas territory and mineral rich Mexico.
December 1762
Louis XV persuades his Spanish cousin Carlos III to accept Louisiana; reluctantly Carlos agrees. Transferring the colony to Spain will allow France to position herself more advantageously before peace negotiations got underway to end the Seven Years  War. Jean François Merieult (1762-1803) Prosperous merchant. He builds his house on Royal Street in 1792.
