| Benjamin H. Latrobe gets the contract to construct a waterworks on the levee between Iberville and Bienville, across Old Levee from the new Custom House he designed. But Congress denies the city this land so it is built on the batture corner of Old Levee and Ursulines. |
James Bradford establishes the Time Piece at St. Francisville, the first newspaper in the Florida parishes which had only recently become a part of the territory of Orleans. 1811 Madisonville originally called Cokie (from Coquille) because of the abundance of shells in the area is renamed for President James Madison. It is the site of a navy yard in early 1800s. According to legend Gen. Andrew Jackson, enroute to New Orleans in Nov. 1814 stopped here at the home of Gen. David B. Morgan. |
Young Baron Joseph Xavier Celestin (Tin-Tin) Delfau de Pontalba is married to his cousin Micaela Leonarda Antonia Almonester y Roxas the daughter of the Spanish Alférez Real (Royal Standard Bearer) Don Andres Almonester y Roxas. The match had been made between the young baron who had served in the French Army and his New Orleans cousin when she was only 15. The young couple sails to Paris after the wedding accompanied by their mothers. Bernard Marigny gives away the bride at the wedding of Micaela Almonester to the son of Bernards godfather Joseph Xavier Delfau de Pontalba. Bernard is representing Marshal Ney a distinguished friend of the Pontalbas and one of Napoleons advisors. |
Revolutionary War hero Wade Hampton buys the Houmas Indian land grant sold to Conway and Latil in 1774. Houmas House Plantation is a two and a half story Greek Revival mansion built on the land by Col. John Preston Smith of South Carolina in 1840. It is acquired by John Burnside in 1857 and he will add the hexagonal garçonniéres (bachelors quarters) on either side. Restored by Dr. George Crozat in 1940.
