September 14 An armed force of Democrats marches on the State House in New Orleans to overthrow the state government. A local group known as the White League attacks Governor William Pitt Kelloggs predominantly black Metropolitan Police. Known as the Battle of Liberty Place the insurrection rages on Canal Street, Kellogg flees to the Custom House and appeals to president Grant who calls up troops to return order to the state. The league than goes on to capture government buildings and install their own governor. Several regiments of federal troops and navy ships on the river convinced the league to back down, but the event marked the beginning of the end of Carpetbag rule in New Orleans. Future governor Louis Alfred Wiltz did not participate in the Battle of Liberty Place, but he made much noise congratulating its leaders John McEnery and David B. Penn from his position in the House of Representatives. |
