Crescent City Billiard Hall opens at the corner of Canal St. and St. Charles Ave. The Italianate facade designed by Henry Howard dates from this time although the building dates from 1826. The upper floor has served as the Pickwick Club clubhouse since 1950.

Self-taught engineer James B. Eads wins a contract to construct jetties at the South Pass of the Mississippi River. New Orleans has been losing trade as ships with deeper drafts avoid New Orleans because of silt blocking the mouth of the river.

The Rayne Memorial Methodist Church at 3900 St. Charles Ave. is built in memory of the donors son William Rayne who died at the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Land purchased from the Foucher plantation in 1871 by the Board of Park Commissioners of City Park, a state agency, is transferred to the City of New Orleans. At this time what will become Audubon Park is called Upper City Park. |
