Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) considered the worlds greatest tragedienne visits New Orleans during her American tour of 1880. She will return to the city many times particularly during her ludicrously frequent farewell tours. Writer Kate Chopin will live in Cloutierville, La. from 1880-1883. The renown writer of Creole short stories set in famed Cane River Country is best known for Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie. The home was built in the early 1800s by Alexis Cloutier on Spanish Land Grant #1701. |

The Daily States begins publication as an afternoon newspaper dedicated to States Rights according to Publisher Henry Hearsey. Southern University is the first state black institution of higher learning. Founded in New Orleans in 1880 it becomes a land grant college in 1890 and is moved to Baton Rouge in 1914 with Dr. J. S. Clark, founder, as first president. |
In 1880 the four Couvertie brothers (Jean Baptiste Joseph, Felix Eugene, Benjamin and Louis) who have been in the dry goods business since 1866 buy the lot at the corner of Royal and Ursulines and in 1884 build a unique department store (designed by Thomas Sully) that is an open air market on the first floor. The property remains in the family until 1936. Today the first floor serves as a parking garage. | The Freret House at 1309 Felicity St. is built in the style of an Italianate Villa for the architects family. The Shed Road, completed by Judge John Watkins of Minden, LA, was old Louisianas most unique road. The shed covering the road was continuous for nine miles from Red River in Bossier Parish to Red Chute. It was abandoned after the coming of the first railroad fifteen years later. |
