During the Christmas Holidays the great actress Mrs. D. P. Bowers is appearing at Bidwell’s Academy of Music in the repertoire gems Mary Stewart, Lady Audley’s Secret and MacBeth. At the St. Charles Theatre Dickens Cricket on the Hearth is the feature. The Temple of Art at Canal and Dauphine is presenting The Battle of Paris. Faranta’s Theater at Bourbon and Orleans is featuring the Great Brooklyn Bridge Scene, policemen’s songs chorus and drill. At Eugene Robinson’s Museum is showing Ali Pasha the transparent Turk. He received a pistol ball through his body in the Turkish-Russian War. Now, by means of a silver tube, you can see right through his body.
The New Orleans fire fighting force consists of 1000 active volunteer firemen and 2,000 exempt members who are retired after six years of active service. During the 1860s it acquires a technologically sophisticated fire-alarm system. 24 companies serve the city with up-to-date steam-powered fire engines. City officials, however see the Firemen’s Charitable Association as a powerful political machine and will work to create a paid department run by the city. Trombonist and leader Edward Kid Ory born in LaPlace, La. His first language is French and he is of black Creole background. The city of Crowley is founded and will soon emerge as center of state’s rice industry. Historic district listed on National Register of Historic Places. Significant for its impressive c. 1890-c.1930 commercial area & its superb Victorian residences. The Twin City Gospel Temple originally the Methodist Episcopal Church. Built in St. Bernard Parish by sugar cane plantation owner Capt. John N. Pharr and wife Henrietta. They donated the church building and land to the Methodists in 1899.
