A new state constitution denies suffrage to those who cannot read or write. Governor Murphy James Foster appoints Caffery and N. C. Blanchard to the U. S. Senate. Louisiana Tech. is established in Ruston and the lottery is outlawed. There is now direct election of police juries and new segregation laws. A comprehensive drainage plan for New Orelans is initiated and will be completed by 1904. |
New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad finally adopts electric streetcars powered by overhead wires. It changes its name to the St. Charles Line. | Songwriter, publisher and pianist Clarence Williams born in Plaquemines, La. | The first football match between Tulane and Louisiana State University is played in Sportsmens Park located at City Park and the New Basin Canal in 1893. It was unique in that the two teams had the same coach. T. L. Bayle had been a Yale University football star in the 1880s. The New Orleans native also coached and stared for the Southern Athletic Club. Tulane won 34-0 and the proceeds went to buy horses for Charity Hospital ambulances. |
