The second St. Charles Hotel burns down. | Gibson Hall, a Romanesque building at 6823 St. Charles Avenue, is the first structure built for the new Tulane University. | Audubon Place laid out. | Indian Camp plantation home, near Carville in Iberville Parish, built in the 1850s, became the site of the Louisiana State Leprosarium in 1894. The U.S. Public Health Service acquired it in 1921. It is now known as the National Hansens Disease Center. |
In St. Landry Parish C. C. Duson drove a stake and said: On this spot I will build a town and name it for my wife, Eunice. An auction of lots was held to start a town, Sept. 12, 1894. The depot is listed on National Register of Historic Places. Near Sulphur, La. in Calcasieu Parish Herman Frasch forces steam into salt dome caprock, returning solid molten sulfur to surface. Sicilys sulfur monopoly was broken. |
