On January 29, 1897 a 38 block neighborhood of bawdy houses becomes Storyville, New Orleans famous legalized red-light district. It is named after the city Alderman Sidney Story who saw it as a way to segregate New Orleans prostitution problem from the rest of the city. It encompassed the area from the downtown side of Customs House (Iberville) Street to the uptown side of St. Louis Street and from the lake side of Basin to the river side of Robertson Street. The Storyville area provides constant work for the citys musicians. |

In 1897 Lee Christmas begins his career as a Latin American revolutionary Whether as a police chief or General de Brigada, in Guatemala or Honduras he was ready for action. Latin American countries vied for his services and money was never a problem. Newspapers called him the president maker and wrote of the charmed life of the adventurer who had survived seven wounds and numerous assassination attempts. His romantic adventures were also the stuff of legend. All good things must come to an end and in 1915 new regimes in both Honduras and Guatemala decide that they could do without Lee Christmas. But to Lee it didnt matter because he had a dozen plans for making money. He tried to enlist for World War I, but was too old. His other business ideas did not pan out. He dies in New Orleans in January of 1924. |
