Denham Springs village is incorporated in Livingston Parish. Mineral spring area near here is owned by William Denham from 1829 to 1855. The hotel near the springs built prior to the Civil War. Hill s Springs post office renamed Denham Springs in 1898. Krauss Department store opens in 1903 at 1201 Canal Street by Leon Fellman and his nephews the Krauss brothers Max Alfred, Leopold and Fritz. The store will survived into the 1990s by stocking obscure items not available in large chains and by refusing to reduce service to its loyal New Orleans customers. It was a monument to the old fashion way of doing business and proud of it. During its 94 years of existance is expands from 20,000 square feet to 350,000 square feet, all on a real estate parcel of 8 1/2 acres fronting on Canal Street. First Automobile law. Louisiana s first oil refinery is built in Jennings, La. marking the start of the state s petro-chemical industry.
