In October President Theodore Roosevelt accepted an invitation to visit the city against the protests of his advisers. In spite of the epidemic, the yachting and opera seasons went on as scheduled. Dr. Joseph H. White, the assistant surgeon General came from Washington to help with sanitation efforts when he innocently crossed into Mississippi and was quarantined.

Freddie Keppard organizes the Olympia Orchestra with Alphonse Picou on clarinet.
Galatoire's Restaurant opens its doors on Bourbon Street inthe French Quarter.
Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) photographer, Ghosts along the Mississippi. The last Yellow Fever epidemic. Dr. Matas who warned the community in 1882 has urged the Orleans Parish Medical Society to locate the geographical distribution of the mosquitoes. Many are found in cisterns and puddles. They advocate screens for windows and cisterns. They also urge that swamps be drained to eliminate breeding grounds. 456 die this year, but it is the last outbreak in the United States. The first oil well in Caddo-Pine Island Field is completed by Savage Brothers and Morrical. It was the first oil well in North Louisiana and opened up the field for the Great Caddo-Pine Island Oil boom.. The New Orleans Railways Company goes into receivership and is reorganized as the New Orleans Railway and Light Company. The first Katz & Besthoff Drug Store opens at 732 Canal St. in 1905 with a handshake between Memphis, Tenn. druggest Sidney Besthof and local pharmacist Gus Dave Katz. A second will open in 1909 The venerable purple J&B Signs will come down in 1998, becoming Rite Aid stores.
