He served in the Louisiana Legislature and the U.S. Congress from Franklin. | Trumpeter Henry ³Red² Allen born in Algiers, La. | Grunewald Hotel is built on University Place just off of Canal St. Many older natives know it as the Roosevelt Hotel (1924), but today it flies the Fairmont Hotel (1965) flag. Public belt railroad built. Touro Synagogue at 4330 St. Charles is built by architect Emile Weil who has built local mansions and theatres in the Beaux Arts style. |
Centenary College is relocated to Shreveport. Centenary is the oldest privately operated liberal arts college west of the Mississippi. Louisiana State celebrates a 10-0 football season. It does not have another 10 game winning season until it wins the national championship in 1958. |
Janesville established in West Carroll Parish. Frank Janes came first, followed by John Janes and other Croatians. The Frank Janes Company produced and exported barrel staves for use in French claret production. Janesville flourished until the company disbanded in 1928. | The Great Southern Lumber Co. (1908-1938) built in Bogalusa. Founders F.H. and C.W. Goodyear chose city and mill sites May 15, 1906. The sawmill began operations September 1, 1908 with a million board feet daily capacity, making it the world s largest.
