Louis Armstrong sent to Jones  Waifs Home for firing a gun in the air during Christmas celebrations. While there he is given a coronet by Peter Davis and joins the band. When he leaves he will sell coal by day and play music in Storyville at night. This year the first appearance of ³jazz² in print in the San Francisco Bulletin on March 6. It describes an army band.

New Orleans Chamber of Commerce formed. The city of Gretna is incorporated in Jefferson Parish 20 August 1913. John Ehret, first mayor. Seat of Jefferson Parish government since 1884. German settlement laid out in 1836 by Benjamin Buisson for Nicolas Noel Destrehan as Village of Mechanikham. Manale s Restaurant is founded by Frank Manale at 1838 Napoleon Avenue. After his death it is taken over by Pascal Radosta and is renamed Pascal s Manale. The restaurant s bar survived prohibition and the eatery is still open at that location today.
