On April 13, 1933 any beverage containing 3.2% alcohol are legalized by Congress and within a few days 911 retail beer permits were issued in the city. Restaurants become beer gardens and hotel bars reopened. 488,000 gallons of beer are sold in a few hours. Prohibition ends at exactly 5:23 p.m. on December 5, 1933 as Utah is the 36 state to ratify the 21st amendment.

In July the Times Picayune Publishing Co. buys The New Orleans States.

O. K. Allen becomes Governor of Louisiana. Pelicans win the pennant of the AA Southern Association. Harvey Locks to Intracoastal Waterway completed. The Daily States is purchased by the Picayune and is continued as an afternoon paper.
American Progress is founded by Huey P. Long as his administration's voice. It becomes the Progress later and suspends publication in February 1940.
