Much of the commerce that had disappeared when railroads replaced steamboats returns. Walter Wedell had succeeded his brother Jimmie as chief pilot of the Wedell-Williams air service the previous year when Jimmie had been killed in a crash. Besides regularly scheduled flights and mail service to Houston, the two brothers often gave lessons and flew mercy flights of medicine and patients from the swamps. On July 20, 1935 Walter took a routine trip to Mobile with a single passenger but the plane never arrived in Mobile. by 3 p.m. the plane had been spotted in four feet of water in Chandeleur Sound, miles off course. and headed in the wrong direction. The plane was in several pieces, the weather had been clear and inspectors said nothing had been wrong with the plane. Walters injuries were to his back with a mysterious indentation made by a heavy object. His body was found behind the pilot s seat. The passenger Howard Sanders of Anderson S. C. , was even more mysterious, but all the answers went down with the two men. Straight University merges with New Orleans University to become Dillard University. WPA is formed and New Orleans takes advantage of the agency to develop the lakefront and in constructing roads and bridges around town, especially in City Park. Artist Enrique Alvarez
