On the seventh of December the resident of the Georgian Revival house built around 1900 at 4631 St. Charles Ave. dumps a large pile of papers in the drive way and burns them. It serves as the Japanese Consulate at the time.
Ground breaking begins on Moisant Airport, but in December it is turned over to the federal government which spends $3 million to complete two 5,000-foot runways and a 7,000-foot runway with taxiways and apron.
Jelly Roll Morton dies. A New Orleans jazz revival features Bunk Johnson with a new set of teeth and Kid Ory. LCVPs-Landing Craft Vehicle-Personnel are built at Higgins Industries which employs 30,000 New Orleanians, including many blacks and women who have their first jobs. Military installations in the area include Camp Leroy Johnson, the Algiers Naval Base, Jackson Barracks, Camp Plauche and the Naval Reserve Aviation Base (on the site of present day UNO) In the 1940s the New Orleans Item became embroiled in a feud with Gretna Sheriff Beauregard ³Bugs² Miller.
