Controversial mint vending machines appear in New Orleans bars on Dec. 8, 1942 after a lengthy court fight over whether or not they are gambling devices. For a nickel the customer gets a package of mints and a pull on the arm that sets three wheels spinning momentarily. If a winning combination is hit from three to 20 tokens which are good for playing the machine, and nothing else. a fortune also appeared with the mints.
