Dec. 18, 1948; WDSU signs on as New Orlean s first television station. Owner Edgar Stern has lured Mel Leavitt away from New Your to be the station s sports and special events director. He will work Sugar Bowls, LSU football, Tulane and Loyola basketball, the fair grounds, boxing matches. His live coverage of the Kefauver hearings in 1960 won him a Peabody Award in 1960 and an Emmy for a 1969 Commentary. He will host countless Mardi Gras telecasts and hosts the local quiz show Prep Quiz Bowl for almost 30 years. He later turns to writing with A Short History of New Orleans in 1983 and Great Characters of New Orleans two years later. He will die at age 70 in 1997. |
