New Orleans granted a Home Rule Charter by the State which gives up much of its arbitrary control over the city. The Charter outlines a new governmental structure which has been amended very little since and protects the city from the whims of the governor. In the 1940s the Katz family sold off its interest in Katz & Besthoff Drug Stores which opened its first store in 1905. In 1954. Sidney Besthof Jr. opens the chain’s eighth store at North Broad Street and Esplanade, touting it as the drugstore prototype of the future. Uptown socialite and model Amelie Woolfolk Diddie Cooper was bludgeoned to death in her home. Her husband Jimmy Cooper who owned the Court of the Two Sisters was tried and acquitted and the case was never solved. Art and Aaron Neville form the Hawkettes and score a local hit with Mardi Gras Mambo.
