Dr. Rudolph Matas dies. He has pioneered blood vessel surgery, introduced sanitary precautions now taken for granted, introduced the first spinal anesthetic into this country and was responsible for today's extensive use of blood transfusions. He identified typhoid fever in Louisiana as a separate disease, leading to its control. A new Civic Center opens downtown and wipes out the historical buildings on the west side of South Rampart Street.
