| James Houston ³Jimmy² Davis, the ³singing Governor² is elected for his second term. This term is marked by scandal, especially regarding the deposit of state money in a Baker bank owned by some of his friends. He ran as a segregationist, but his campaigning consisted in a short concert of his songs and a promise to be honest. Earl Long stole most of the headlines in this election. Davis will run again in 1971. He will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1972. | Public School desegregation begins when the courts reject the separate but equal concept of the past. New Orleans integrates much more peaceably than most large cities, showing unusual tolerance for racial mixing, but the next few decades see white flight and private schools increase, leaving public schools mostly to the remaining minorities. | St. Augustine High School celebrates as it opens a center for teaching voter registration. | Louisiana-born Jay Hebert captures the PGA Championship. Mississippi defeats Louisiana State 21-0 in this year's Sugar Bowl. |
