June 2; A year and a day after being hired as Washington Parish's first black deputy sheriffs, Oneal Moore and Creed Rogers are attacked while on patrol in Varnado. Moore is killed instantly and Rogers loses an eye when the patrol car crashes. Rogers will retire from the Sheriff's Office in 1988 as a Captain. A suspect is released weeks later for lack of evidence. The case is briefly reopened in 1989 and 2001. |
