Moon Landrieu takes office as Mayor.
In 1970 the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which gives the vote to women is ratified in Louisiana. It became U.S. law in 1920. Better late than never.
Kid Ory appears at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Louis Armstrong dies in his sleep in Corona, Long Island two days after his 71st birthday. The first true New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is held in Congo Square with headliners including Henry Professor Longhair Byrd, Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington. Production was taken up by festival promoter George Wein and local jazz archivist Quint Davis who has been the driving force behind the festival since that first year. The festival has grown every year and the foundation it supports sponsors other events and programs for future music stars.
SPORTS
J. D. Roberts becomes the second Saints coach. His term ends in 1972 with a 7-25-3 record.
