The 1998 tropical storm season which has been quiet until now sees a storm every weekend in September. First Earl misses the New Orleans area by a hair as winds shear off its western half and push it over to the upper Gulf Coast. Next Frances floods most of Southeast Louisiana with waters that will stand in many places for the next two weeks. Hermine is the weak sister, followed in the next week by killer Hurricane Georges. Georges makes a bee line toward New Orleans from the West African Coast, leaving 300 dead and billions in damage in the northern Caribbean. At the last minute it slows just 100 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River and heads slowly north to the Mississippi Gulf coast. |
