New Orleans mayor C. Ray Nagin begins a sweep of city hall as arrests are made in the city's Utilities Department, particularly in the Taxi Bureau and at Brake Tag stations.
In late July four people die in Louisiana from Mosquito-borne West Nile Encephilitis. During the next month cases in the state will be over one hundred, the worst outbreak in the nation, as governor Foster calls a state of emergency.
August 2002
New Orleans city hall investigations move into the Office of Safety and Permits.
Tropical depression Bertha moves over Southeast Louisiana the first week of August causing flash floods in the Florida Parishes.

Senator John Breaux takes himself out of the coming gubernatorial race in January.
SPORTS

On January first Louisiana State caps a 10-3 football season with a 47-34 Sugar Bowl win over Illinois, adding several Sugar Bowl and team records to their SEC crown.
